How it works

Set up once. Transfer forever.

Three steps, two minutes, and you'll never email a file to yourself again.

01

Put both devices on the same network

Your phone and computer just need to share a Wi-Fi router, a wired network, or a phone hotspot. No router configuration needed.

02

Scan the QR code once

Open Doorstep on your computer and scan the pairing QR with your phone camera. Choose Personal device to stay paired and reconnect automatically.

03

Drop files — they arrive on their own

Drag anything into a Doorstep folder on your PC. It streams straight to your phone, or to whichever device that drop zone is assigned to.

Features

Built for people, not for clouds

Every feature exists to remove a step between you and your files.

QR code pairing

Scan once and your devices remember each other. No IP addresses to type, no setup screens to fight.

Trust levels

Mark a device Personal to keep it connected and auto-reconnecting, or Session-only for a one-time guest handoff.

Drop zones with routing

Point each watched folder at a specific device, so photos go to your phone and work files go to your laptop — not everything, everywhere.

Live folder browser

Browse your computer's folders from your phone and pull any file over — no searching through chat history.

Two-way transfers

Phone → computer and computer → phone, in both directions, with progress and automatic resume.

Private by design

Transfers are encrypted end-to-end and travel only across your own local network. No server in between, ever.

What your device will say — and what to tap

Doorstep is distributed directly as open-source files, so your operating system shows a standard security prompt. Here's exactly what to do — the same steps appear in a popup when you click download.

Android · Play Protect

“Google Play Protect doesn't recognize this app”

  • Tap More details
  • Tap Install anyway
  • If asked, allow “Install from unknown sources” for this file

This appears because the app is downloaded directly rather than sold on Google Play — the app itself is 100% open source and safe.

Windows · SmartScreen

“Windows protected your PC”

  • Click More info
  • Click Run anyway

This shows for any new executable without a paid commercial certificate. It's a standard caution, not a detection.

Privacy

Your files never leave your network

Doorstep sends data strictly across your own local Wi-Fi router — encrypted, end to end. No remote servers receive your payload, ever.

Setup

Zero configuration

No port forwarding, no static IPs, no router tweaks. Paired devices find each other automatically over your local network.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The short version of everything people ask before trying Doorstep.

Why isn't Doorstep on Google Play or the Microsoft Store?

Doorstep is free and open source. Store listings require developer fees and review queues, so releases are hosted on GitHub and this site first. Store packages are planned for future releases.

Does it work when the internet is completely down?

Yes. Doorstep operates entirely over your local Wi-Fi, a wired network, or a phone hotspot. It never touches the internet.

Is there an iOS or macOS version coming?

Yes — Apple platform support is in active development. Doorstep currently supports Android and Windows.

How does Doorstep relate to LocalSend?

Doorstep is built on the LocalSend protocol core (Apache-2.0) and adds QR persistent pairing, trust levels, drop zones with per-device routing, auto-reconnection, and a live folder browser.

Do I need an account?

No. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no telemetry. Install it, pair your devices, and it works.
